This talk concerns itself with using some known elements of the human psychology to create an NPC or a BBEG that both your players, and your characters, will be terrified of. From a simple farmer to the big eldritch monster, anything can be a scary enemy by the metrics of any (sane) player!

This is an interactive talk, so most of the two hours will be spent with us creating these memorable bad guys together!

What exactly does advice like “fail forward,” “play to find out,” and “prep to improvise” mean? Why should you care about “player styles,” and what exactly is a “session zero?” This talk will introduce many of these ideas, all with an eye toward providing practical tools that gamemasters can implement immediately in their games, and which are useful for any game system (not just D&D). The focus will be on helping you improve how you prepare your games and run them. All the slides and materials presented in this talk will be made available to all attendees.
